Gothic 1 Remake Dexterity Archer Build: Full Guide
The deep dive on the Dexterity archer in Gothic 1 Remake. The Dexterity curve, bow training from Cavalorn and Wolf, bow requirements from the Longbow to the Bow of Death, the crossbow Strength trap, kiting tactics, LP order, and the mistakes that leave archers weak.
This is the deep dive on the Dexterity archer
The best builds overview covers all three paths quickly. This is the single-lane version for the Dexterity archer, the build for players who would rather pull enemies one at a time than get swarmed. You’ll get the Dexterity curve, the bow ladder with real requirements, where to train, how to kite, the LP order, and the mistakes that leave archers underpowered. Read the overview if you want the wider context, then commit here.
The archer trades raw damage for control. Good spacing lets you whittle a creature down before it reaches you, and pulling enemies one by one turns fights that would overwhelm a melee character into routine work. The price is that you have to manage positioning, and the early game is harder than it is for a warrior.
The Dexterity curve, in real numbers
Dexterity does two jobs, the same way Strength does for melee. It raises your ranged damage, and it gates bows and crossbows behind a minimum requirement. So you climb a ladder, training Dexterity to unlock each better bow.
From the weapon database:
- Longbow wants 20 Dexterity (40 damage)
- War Bow wants 38 Dexterity (76 damage)
- Bow of Death wants 50 Dexterity (88 damage)
You raise Dexterity at a trainer, not from leveling. Diego in the Old Camp handles early Dexterity bumps, and Lares or Lee in the New Camp do the same. One point costs 1 Learning Point, and the five-point bulk option costs 5 LP, so there is no bulk discount. The mechanics live in the leveling and skills guide, and there’s a focused page on raising Dexterity.
Bow training: Cavalorn or Wolf
Raising Dexterity keeps better bows in your hands. Bow mastery is what makes your shots land. Train it early, because it changes your draw and your damage, not just a number.
The good news for an archer is that bow training sits entirely outside the factions. You do not need a camp or any reputation to learn it. Two trainers teach it:
- Cavalorn, in his hut outside the Old Camp. He is the easier find, his hut sits on a well-traveled path, and he doubles as a vendor for bows, monster materials, and potions.
- Wolf, inside the New Camp living cave, also out at the makeshift archery range by the lake.
The trained tier runs 10 LP plus 50 ore. Grab Cavalorn’s training on your way through the early areas, since he sells you a bow at the same time. The trainers and locations guide maps the rest.
The crossbow trap
Crossbows look great on paper. The Heavy Crossbow wants 45 Dexterity for 90 damage, and the Crossbow of War wants 55 Dexterity for 100. The problem is the hidden cost. Crossbows also want a chunk of Strength to equip, and crossbow training is guard-faction only, taught by Scorpio at the Old Camp castle training grounds. For a pure Dexterity archer, that splits your stats across two attributes and locks the training behind a specific faction.
If you are building a clean archer, skip crossbows and stay on bows. The only time crossbows make sense is on a Strength-heavy hybrid that already has the muscle to spare.
Recommended camp: New Camp
The New Camp fits the archer best. It is the faction that leans into mobility and ranged play, Wolf trains bows right there in the living cave, and it opens the Water magic path with Ice crowd control if you ever want to splash a freeze. The factions guide covers the trade-offs. Fair warning, the New Camp’s early road is the hardest of the three, so lean on Cavalorn’s faction-free bow training to get your damage online before you commit.
How to actually kite
The build only works if you fight at range, so the tactics matter as much as the stats:
- Pull single targets. Fire one arrow, back off, and deal with one enemy at a time instead of aggroing a pack.
- Use terrain. Rocks, ledges, and narrow paths let you break line of sight and reset a fight that turns bad.
- Keep a light melee backup. When something closes the distance, a fast one-handed sword buys you space to retreat and resume shooting. Dexterity feeds those lighter blades too, so this does not cost you a separate stat.
- Respect your stamina and spacing. An archer who gets cornered loses, so treat retreating as part of the rotation, not a panic move.
Learning Point order
- Bow mastery, trained tier, from Cavalorn. Faction-free and the biggest jump in combat feel.
- Dexterity, in chunks. Clear the Longbow’s 20, then push toward the War Bow’s 38.
- One survival or income skill. Hunting under Drax or the hunters turns kills into sellable trophies and pairs naturally with a ranged playstyle.
- A light one-handed sword and its mastery, only if you keep dying in melee. Keep this minimal.
Common mistakes that leave archers weak
The first mistake is splitting Dexterity and Strength. Players see the crossbow numbers, dip into Strength, and end up unable to wield the best bow or the best crossbow. Pick bows, feed Dexterity, and ignore the crossbow numbers.
The second is fighting in melee range out of habit. The archer’s whole advantage is distance. If you stand and trade blows, you are playing a worse warrior with a worse weapon.
The third, shared with every build, is hoarding Learning Points and never visiting a trainer. LP does nothing in your pocket. Carry it to Cavalorn or Diego and pay the ore. Fund the ore loop with the ore farming guide, and your Dexterity will climb fast enough to keep pace with the bow ladder.
Build one stat, learn to kite, and the archer goes from fragile to one of the most controlled playstyles in the game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you learn bow training in Gothic 1 Remake?
From Cavalorn in his hut outside the Old Camp, or from Wolf inside the New Camp living cave. Bow training sits outside the main factions, so you can learn it without committing to a camp. The trained tier costs 10 Learning Points plus 50 ore.
How much Dexterity does an archer build need?
It scales with the bow. The Longbow wants 20 Dexterity, the War Bow wants 38, and the Bow of Death wants 50. You feed Dexterity steadily to clear each bow's requirement rather than aiming at a single number.
Are crossbows good for a Dexterity archer in Gothic 1 Remake?
They hit hard but they are a trap for a pure Dexterity build. Crossbows want heavy Strength as well as Dexterity, and crossbow training is guard-faction only through Scorpio. Stick with bows unless you are building a Strength hybrid.
