Gothic 1 Remake: How to Join the Old Camp and Become a Shadow
The full admission quest line for the Old Camp. Which Shadows to do favors for, the quests that earn their vouch, Diego's Test of Faith and its password, the level you need, and the meeting with Gomez that locks you in for good.
What it means to become a Shadow
Joining the Old Camp means becoming a Shadow, the camp’s working class of fighters and errand-runners under Gomez. The game does not just hand you the title. You earn it by proving useful to the Shadows who already wear it, then getting vouched for up the chain until Gomez himself signs off.
This guide is the how. If you are still deciding between the three factions, read the which camp to join guide and the factions breakdown first, because once you finish this quest line you are locked in. There is no swapping camps later.
Step 1: Earn vouches by doing favors
The core requirement is to complete favor quests for Old Camp members so they vouch for you. You do not need every single one, but you want a solid stack of them done. The main ones to look for:
- Whistler’s Sword, from Whistler. Scrape together about 100 nuggets, buy the ornamented sword from Fisk for 110 nuggets, and hand it to Whistler. You keep the relationship and he keeps the blade.
- A Ring for Fingers, from Fingers. Steal Scatty’s ring out of the chest in his hut. You will need lockpicks, and the chest sits just east of where Fingers perches.
- The Vanished Warder, from Sly. Follow the trail to a cave past the south gate, clear the Molerats inside, find Nek’s corpse, and bring back his amulet.
- The Cult’s Recipe, from Dexter. Head to the Swamp Camp, pick the lock on Cor Kalom’s chest, and steal the recipe.
- Out of Sight, from Thorus. Get the New Camp trader Mordrag out of the camp, either by leaning on him or escorting him toward the New Camp. You do not have to kill him.
Pick up these quests as you find them and knock them out on a single loop where you can. Each completed favor is another voice speaking for you when Diego checks your standing.
Step 2: Diego’s Test of Faith
Once you have enough favors behind you, Diego gives you his own task, A Test of Faith. He sends you to the Old Mine to collect a supply list from a man named Ian. The catch is you need the password to get it. When Ian asks, the line is:
“The crawlers look mighty hungry.”
Say that, take the list, and bring it back to Diego at the Old Camp. That earns you one more vouch and signals you are serious.
Step 3: Reach Level 5 and ask Diego
Here is the gate people miss. Even with the favors done, Diego will not push you forward until you are Level 5. So if you have done the legwork and nothing is happening, go earn some experience. Clear wildlife, finish a couple of side quests, get to 5, then talk to Diego about your reputation again.
If you are short on ore for training along the way, the ore farming guide gets you funded fast, and the skill trainers guide tells you exactly who to spend your Learning Points on.
Step 4: Meet Gomez and lock it in
With Level 5 and the vouches in hand, Diego clears you to enter the castle. Go through Thorus at the north gate. Inside the main hall you meet Raven, who takes you to Gomez.
This conversation is the finish line. Pick the dialogue that commits you to the Old Camp. Steer away from bringing up Y’Berion or the other camps’ leaders here, since you are trying to show loyalty to Gomez, not curiosity about the competition. Once the dialogue closes out, you are a Shadow.
Before you finalize, remember
This is a point of no return. The moment you join the Old Camp, the New Camp and Swamp Camp paths close on this save. So have your plan set. If your build wants Water magic or the Swamp’s psionics, the Old Camp is the wrong door. If you are building a Strength warrior with a clean early route and Fire magic later, this is exactly where you want to be, and the best builds guide lines up the rest of the path.
Quest names, the password, and the Level 5 requirement reflect the 2026 remake as played post-launch. A couple of NPC names appear with slightly different spellings across sources, so do not worry if a name in your game reads a touch differently from the one here.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you join the Old Camp in Gothic 1 Remake?
Earn vouches from the Shadows by completing favor quests for them, reach Level 5, then ask Diego about your reputation. He sends you through Thorus at the north gate into the castle, where Raven introduces you to Gomez. Picking the right dialogue with Gomez finalizes your membership.
What level do you need to join the Old Camp?
Level 5. You can complete the favor quests earlier, but Diego will not move you forward to meet Gomez until you hit Level 5, so bank the experience before you expect the door to open.
Is joining the Old Camp a point of no return?
Yes. Once you swear into the Old Camp you cannot join the New Camp or the Swamp Camp on that save. Decide your build and faction before you finalize it, because the choice is permanent.
