How to Join the New Camp in Gothic 1 Remake (Mercenary or Rogue)
Full walkthrough for joining the New Camp in Gothic 1 Remake, from the Joining the New Camp quest under Lares to the later Mercenary track under Lee.
Joining the New Camp is the slow road, and that is the point
If you picked the New Camp, you chose the hardest opening in the game. The Old Camp is right there with a clean route and easy ore. The New Camp makes you walk further, fight more on the way in, and prove yourself before anyone hands you armor. The payoff is a faction built around free ore and the breakout plan, which suits a Dexterity archer build better than anywhere else.
Here is the part that trips people up. The New Camp has layers. You join as a bandit first, under Lares. The Mercenary track, the one people actually want, comes later and has its own gate. And the “Rogues” you hear about are not even a New Camp rank, they are a splinter group Lee sends you to scope out. Let me untangle all of it.
Step one: get accepted as a bandit (the Lares quest)
The quest that gets you in the door is called Joining the New Camp, and the quest giver is Lares, the bandit leader. You do not become a member by walking up and asking once. You build a points total by being useful around the camp, and once you clear the threshold Lares accepts you.
The pieces that worked for me:
- Bring Mordrag’s ring. During Thorus’ Assignment, Mordrag escorts you over to the New Camp and gives you his ring as a token of trust. Hang onto it.
- Get past Roscoe before you meet Lares. Roscoe stands in the passage to Lares and blocks the way. You do not have to kill him. Grab the Pacify scroll from Baal Kagan’s errand and use it on Roscoe to calm him down so you can slip past. Do this before your first proper sit-down with Lares, because the timing matters.
- Hand the ring to Lares inside his hut.
- Run The Herb Merchant. Take Baal Isidro’s swampweed stock and bring 400 ore back to Lares.
- Do the supply-list errand. Ask Torlof about getting in. He points you at delivering the Old Mine supply list (the one from the Trial of Trust, an Old Camp admission quest) to Lares, who modifies it, and then you carry the changed list to Diego in the Old Camp.
- Collect your loot share. Come back, talk through the ambushed convoy with Lares, and grab your cut from Gorn.
Once you have racked up enough points, tell Lares you are ready. He swears you in and gives you bandit clothing. That is membership.
Step two: the Mercenary track (the part people actually want)
Bandit is the entry rank. Mercenaries are the New Camp’s real muscle, and the Mercenary path opens later, with a separate acceptance track that runs through Lee rather than Lares. Plan to be around level 10 before this track opens up properly, so do not expect to walk in as a mercenary on day one.
The standout Mercenary quest is Joining the Mercenaries, a later-chapter job. You find Lee in his guarded room on the right side of the residential cave, and he agrees to bring you in only if you help the Water Mage Myxir with an investigation. That sends you east along the river toward the lighthouse and down to a shipwreck on the beach.
A warning on that beach. Fire Lizards patrol the wreck and their fire breath shreds your health fast. Treat it as a ranged fight. Stay out of breath range, let Myxir freeze them, and put arrows in them while they are iced. Then dive to the submerged mast, loot the druid book from the chest, hand it to Myxir, and return to Lee. He promotes you and hands over Mercenary armor.
Where the Rogues fit in (they are not a rank)
This is the bit that confuses everyone. There is a quest called The Rogues’ Camp, given by Lee, and it is not a way to “join the rogues” as a New Camp class. Lee wants you to find the breakaway rogue camp in the northwestern canyon and size up their leader, Quentin, to see if they are a threat.
Getting to Quentin means heading north through a hidden cave path from the Old Camp area, fighting Snappers, and passing Brannok’s checkpoint. You can kill Brannok for the fast route, or free Arlin for some bonus content if you have castle access. Quentin sits by a fire at the cliff edge. One thing to know: if you killed Quentin on an earlier visit, you can lock yourself out of finishing this. So leave him alive until the quest sends you.
A few things that save you grief
Do your wandering before you commit. A lot of the best skill trainers sit out on the road or in neutral spots, so train up before you swear loyalty anywhere. And if you are unsure the New Camp is even the right home for your character, read the camp comparison first, because there is no undo on faction choice. The New Camp rewards the breakout-minded player who likes free ore and a ranged playstyle. If that is you, the long walk in is worth it.
Quest names, NPCs, and step order here are drawn from post-launch coverage of the 2026 remake. Point totals and level gates can shift slightly between patches, so if Lares or Lee will not advance you, check whether you are missing a recommendation or a chapter milestone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who do you talk to first to join the New Camp in Gothic 1 Remake?
Lares, the bandit leader. The Joining the New Camp quest runs through him. You build a points total by helping people around the camp, deliver Mordrag's ring, then tell Lares you are ready and he swears you in as a bandit.
What is the difference between a Mercenary and a Rogue in the New Camp?
Mercenaries are the New Camp's armed enforcers and the path that unlocks better armor, but the full Mercenary track opens later and wants you around level 10. Bandits are the entry rank you earn first under Lares. The Rogues are a separate breakaway camp Lee sends you to investigate, not a New Camp rank.
Do the Water Mages teach you magic when you join the New Camp?
Not right away. You can join the New Camp early, but the Water Mages under Saturas do not start training you until later in the story, around Chapter 4. Joining gets you into the faction first, the magic comes after.
